How to Draw a Dog Nose
Ahoy my tangling friends!
Today we explore Ahoi, a summer-inspired tangle from Swiss CZT Annett Ruempler.
Before we get to Annett's tangle, just for fun and because inquiring minds need to know, I thought we could learn a little about the origins of the word 'ahoy'. From Wikipedia:
Ahoy is a signal word used to call to a ship or boat. It's derived from the Middle English cry, 'Hoy!'. The word fell out of use at one time, but was revived when sailing became a popular sport. 'Ahoy' can also be used as a greeting, a warning, or a farewell.
One or another variation on the word is found in several languages. In Czech and Slovak, ahoj is a common, colloquial greeting, while 'hoi' in Modern Dutch and Swiss German, 'oi' in Brazilian Portuguese and Italian, and 'Ohøj' in Danish are informal greetings equivalent to the English 'hi' or 'hey'.
'Ahoy' originated in the seafaring world, where it was used as an interjection to catch the attention of crew members and as a general greeting. It is often used today by participants in playful imitations of pirate speak.
Alexander Graham Bell initially suggested that the standard greeting when answering a telephone should be 'ahoy', but instead 'hello' (suggested by Thomas Edison) was adopted.
Wouldn't it be fun if we started answering our phones with "Ahoy!", it would confuse the heck out of callers. (Maybe I've been watching too much The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel!)
Annett's Ahoi comes complete with icons for sailboats, water and waves, it's a fun and easy tangle to play with and I'm sure you can dream up more ways to embellish it. A large scale would provide more real estate for that …
Annett illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ahoi here on her blog where she notes that if you change direction of the fragments — rotating and mirroring them — "new possibilities arise".

"Keep it Non-representational. Zentangle artwork is intended to be non-representational. Zentangle's elemental strokes are also non-representational.
We don't teach complex elements such as hearts, stars or flowers. Tangles are also non-representational."
Remember that tangles never start with pencil planning! If you need a refresher on what makes a tangle, read the A PATTERN IS NOT ALWAYS A TANGLE page on the ZENTANGLES menu bar at the top of any page.
Everyone is invited to submit patterns, you do NOT need to be a CZT. However, in order for patterns to be considered for TanglePatterns.com they must be submitted to me by email. In other words you have to let me know about them. Here's how:

The first page includes instructions on how to prepare and send your file. It also includes a link to this PDF submission form - NOTE: be sure to right click the link to download the file. I've recently updated the form with more information so if you have an old copy, you might like to download the current edition.
When your examples include additional tangles from the site, please list them in your email. (This saves me time and my memory some wear and tear.)
If your pattern is posted on your blog, attach your steps and tile images to your email and be sure your email includes the direct URL so I can link to it.
And remember, to quote Zentangle's co-founders Rick and Maria: tangles should be "magical, simple and easy to create", non-objective patterns of repetitive strokes that are easy to teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.
"Keep the tangles as little like 'drawing something' as possible."
