1. "Hello" by Adele

How do you apologize for breaking someone's heart? Where do you begin? This distressed woman starts with "hello" as she leaves an old lover a rambling voicemail.

Oozing regret, the woman in this 2015 pop ballad attempts to reconnect with her old lover. Although their relationship ended years ago, she is still haunted by how it ended. She has called him repeatedly in an attempt to make peace with her past, but he never seems to answer. Sadly, she concludes that he has moved on.

2. "Hello Hello" by Mari Ferrari

Both the simple lyrics of this 2016 pop song and the sweet voice of Mari Ferrari make this danceable tune ideal to send to someone you're crushing on. The narrator in the song has searched the world over for someone special, and she is excited to welcome a new love.

3. "Hello" by Lionel Richie

In this classic pop song from 1984, the narrator pines away for someone who occasionally passes by his door. He's afflicted with a mild obsession as he dreams about her and wonders where she is, who she's with, and what she is feeling. Believing that she is everything he has ever wanted, the narrator ponders reaching out and telling her "hello" then spilling his guts.

The song's video, however, amps up the creepy factor considerably. It features a teacher secretly in love with his blind student. He hides and watches her the blind student from not too far away. Awkward!

4. "You Had Me from Hello" by Kenny Chesney

"You had me at hello" is one of the most romantic movie quotes ever. It appeared in the 1996 film, Jerry Maguire, and appears to be the inspiration for this 1999 country love song.

In the song, the narrator becomes instantly love-stricken upon meeting a woman. Their attraction is instant, and their connection grows more intense with time:

5. "Hello, I Love You" by The Doors

You have to be extremely self-confident to use a pick-up line like this: "Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name?" In this classic 1968 rock song, a long-legged beauty passes by the narrator, and he attempts to capture her attention with a declaration of love. The pick-up line is based on Jim Morrison's own experience with a woman on Venice Beach.

6. "Trees" by Twenty One Pilots

God isn't specifically mentioned in this stirring 2011 rock song, but the strong Christian faith of songwriter Tyler Jacobs makes it evident that the narrator is conversing with Him in nature. The narrator stands silent among the trees. Feeling cowardly, he calls out, "hello," wanting to hear a sign of God and know Him.

7. "Hello Friday" by Flo Rida (featuring Jason Derulo)

Monday through Thursday are simply countdown days, according to this 2016 hip-hop song. A rough workweek culminates in Friday, which is a time to let loose and party: booze, hook-ups, and dropping cash. On Saturday you hit the beach to chill, and on Sunday you pray for forgiveness and look forward to next Friday.

A conflict threatens to splinter the couple in this 2018 pop song. The narrator's partner has been suffering a crisis of confidence and has been losing sleep about their relationship. She attempts to reassure him by letting him know that she still believes in him and is not ready to give up on their relationship. She uses the words, "hello, hello" to try to break through to him.

9. "Hello, You Beautiful Thing" by Jason Mraz

In this incurably positive 2014 pop song, the confident narrator wakes up and is naturally high on life. He's having a magical day, almost like he's at Disney World, and is looking forward to saying "hello" to his someone special.

10. "I Said Hi" by Amy Shark

In this 2018 pop song, the narrator is fighting for the world to notice her. She's waiting for her moment of fame to arrive. Although she's tired of having to prove herself, she isn't about to give up on her dream. To the doubters and those who stand between her and success, she says, "Tell 'em all I said 'hi.'"

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876 and advocated "Ahoy" as a greeting. However, the first telephone manual two years later gave two choices for greetings: "What is wanted?" and "Hello?" (suggested by Thomas Edison).

11. "Hello Again" by Hoobastank

What do you do when you sense your love relationship fading into the friendzone? In this 2001 rock song, the narrator feels his romantic partnership is changing. He hopes that eventually, with a little distance they will say "hello" again and reunite with the experience making them stronger than ever before. That might be wishful thinking.

12. "Hey There Lonely Girl" by Eddie Holman

The sensitive bystander in this 1969 R&B tune calls out, "Hey there, lonely girl" to a heartbroken young woman, hoping to get her attention. With a soothing voice, he promises to alleviate her sadness by kissing her tears away, repairing her heart, and restoring her trust. Sounds like a recipe for rebound romance!

13. "Everything Has Changed" by Taylor Swift (featuring Ed Sheeran)

If you haven't already met the love of your life, you will someday. A lifetime together will all start with a simple "hello."

This 2012 pop song is about wanting to get to know a new partner better. The narrator realizes that everything changed with a greeting, and she replays their introduction and their time shared together so far in her mind. She recognizes that this is the beginning of something beautiful.

14. "Hello" by Martin Solveig (featuring Dragonette)

Looks like someone just got friend-zoned. The girl in this 2010 international pop hit shows up at a party, and she tells a guy who likes her "hello." However, then she decides to play it cool. Although the girl acknowledges that he's cute, she cautions him not to get too excited because she's just here to enjoy the party. Ouch.

15. "Hello" by Evanescence

This somber rock ballad from 2003 is very personal and has never been played in concert. It is based on the death of the younger sister of Evanescence lead vocalist Amy Lee.

Amy Lee was only six years old when she was told at school that her three year-old sister had died. The song takes the perspective of a child who doesn't fully grasp the concept of death. The young narrator's inner voice calls out "hello" as a way to self-comfort.

16. "Hello" by Hedley

The narrator in this 2015 pop song misses his partner and tries to cut through the conflict between them. Trying to change her heart, he picks up the phone and asks her to say "hello" rather than "goodbye." He hates how they fight and encourages her to please not give on their relationship.

Remember your first crush back in grade school? I sure do. We played chase at recess and took turns being the chaser. I can still recall my second-grade crush's name. Life was straightforward then. You didn't have all the emotional baggage and complicated expectations of adulting.

This 2017 alt-rock song is about a guy who contacts his childhood crush to ask if she can help him "sober up," or return to an earlier time of emotional authenticity:

18. "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's

The guy in this 2006 global hit calls his love interest who is 1,000 miles away at college in New York City. He greets her, "Hey there, Delilah," then launches into compliments and dreams about supporting them both with his music one day. You'd imagine the two are lovers, right?

In actuality, this tune was based on a real person, Delilah DiCrescenzo. The real Delilah was a world-class long-distance runner attending Columbia University who was introduced to Plain White T's singer Tom Higgenson at a party. He tried to win her affection by saying he'd write a song about her. She was dating someone else, and the two were never in a relationship. Creepy, huh?

19. "Hello World" by Lady Antebellum

According to this 2010 country ballad, the day-to-day grind can leave you feeling empty, cold and broken. It can cause you to forget what's important in life, and you may not pause long enough to notice life's precious details. That's what sometimes happens to the narrator in this song. However, looking at his family reminds him of what is important. They are flickers of light that remind him why he's here. He calls out, "Hello, world," as a reminder that he is part of something greater.

20. "Hello" by will.i.am (featuring Afrojack)

In this 2013 pop song has a pulsating electronic beat, and the narrator shouts out "hello" repeatedly to anyone who will listen. Not wanting to be alone tonight, he surrounds himself with friends, wannabe-friends, and strangers. Together they party and try to forget all their worries, just wanting to have fun. Ever felt like that? Hello?

I had no idea there were so many songs about this simple greeting. I recently learned that "hello" is a relatively new term brought into use by the invention of the telephone. There's one more song that comes to mind for your list: "Hello in There" by John Prine.
